Clematis 'Multi Blue' arose in 1983 as a sport of 'The President' at the Dutch nursery Bouter & Zoon in Boskoop. Its 8-12 cm flowers appear in a rich violet-blue and open densely double at first: the long, pointed outer sepals surround numerous narrower, paler inner petals, from which the spiky-looking blue stamens later emerge.
From June to September, 'Multi Blue' flowers in two flushes on both old and new growth. At around 250 cm, it suits trellises, lattices and obelisks as well as container planting on patios and balconies; it thrives best in a sunny to semi-shaded, sheltered spot with cool roots.
'Multi Blue' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 50 cm in March; since it flowers on both old and new wood, it then reliably shows its full flush of blooms. Give it one to two years to establish, and it will develop into a vigorous climber.

Multi Blue is really a very beautiful variety, and in the shade it has a really dark blue. Only sunlight brings a slight violet hint. In the first year it didn't bloom for me, but now it has been blooming since early May.Automatically translated · Show original
Multiblue stands at our wooden deck, against an east wall, and blooms very, very willingly. Every year it gets about 2.50 m tall, winds along a thin wire and seems unkillable, neither by cold nor by the lack of water it suffered last year. We like it a lot. In early winter I cut it back to about 50 cm.Automatically translated · Show original
