Clematis 'The President' was raised in 1873 by English breeder Charles Noble of Sunningdale and introduced in 1876 – a cross of Clematis 'Jackmanii' and Clematis lanuginosa combining the best traits of both parents. The large, richly violet flowers reach 10 to 14 cm in width, appear in great abundance, and show 6 to 8 slightly overlapping sepals, paler on the reverse, with whitish stamens tinged pink at the base.
'The President' flowers twice a year: the first, especially generous flush appears on last year's wood from May to June, followed by a second flush on new growth from July to August. With a height of around 300 cm, the variety is ideal for obelisks, rose arches or larger trellises that give some stability to its abundant blooms. It tolerates a range of soil and light conditions and shows its colour to best effect against a lighter background.
The variety is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C) and, thanks to its modest demands, is considered especially suitable for beginners. Because the first flowers form on older wood, 'The President' should only be pruned after the first flowering period in June – back to about 100 cm. Introduced around 150 years ago, it remains one of the most popular clematis varieties and holds the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

A very well-proven clematis that shines from afar, with large flowers. With me it has very regular flowers as in the large picture, in a strong, dark blue. Although it has been on the market for a long time, one of my favourite varieties. Flowers for a very long time, flowers very durable, also proven in shade, with me among other places in a yew.Automatically translated · Show original
I have also had the Präsident sitting for a while now in the courtyard in a large container against a wall. It obviously likes it very much there. It regularly shows an enormous abundance of flowers; last year even until the frost. We are delighted again and again.Automatically translated · Show original
