Clematis 'Valge Daam' comes from the Estonian breeder Uno Kivistik, who raised it around 1980 from the cross 'Bal Tsvetov' × 'Madame Van Houtte'. Its name means 'The White Lady' in Estonian. The white flowers measure 12–15 cm and look star-like because the broadly oval tepals end in unusually long points; in the centre sit long, beige stamens.
'Valge Daam' flowers from July to September. At around 200 cm it stays manageable and does not grow too strongly: it suits trellises, supports and fences, thrives in containers and combines well with roses and shrubs. Choose a spot in sun or semi-shade with evenly moist but well-drained soil.
'Valge Daam' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and is regarded as healthy and not prone to wilt. Cut the plant back to about 50 cm in March, and it shoots away strongly.
