Clematis 'Jackmanii' ranks among the most significant clematis ever raised: in 1858, George Jackman Jnr at the English nursery George Jackman & Son crossed Clematis lanuginosa with a viticella hybrid. Introduced for sale in 1863, it received the RHS First Class Certificate that same year and the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 1993. Its 8–10 cm, gently nodding flowers show four (occasionally five or six) velvety deep-violet sepals with a hint of grey-blue, set off by a cluster of creamy to greenish-yellow stamens.
From July to September, 'Jackmanii' covers itself abundantly in flowers and reaches around 300 cm in height. This robust climber is superb on fences, pergolas, trellises and obelisks, and also happily scrambles through smaller shrubs or climbing roses — a combination already popular in Victorian England. 'Jackmanii' thrives in sunny to semi-shaded positions and has no special soil requirements.
Hardy to zone 5 (−28.8 to −23.4 °C), 'Jackmanii' is among the toughest clematis cultivars. Since it flowers only on the current year's growth, cut it back hard to about 50 cm in March — it will reliably resprout from below and reward you with an especially rich display. Should individual shoots be affected by clematis wilt, simply cut them out: 'Jackmanii' is known to resprout quickly.

I have had jackmanii for many years. She flowers reliably and lavishly every year and grows to about 3 m here in a full-sun position. Unfortunately she is somewhat susceptible to clematis wilt, but if you cut off the affected shoots right away, she resprouts well from below.Automatically translated · Show original
