The clematis 'Elten' was raised in 1995 by W. Straver in Germany from a cross of 'Mayleen' with an unknown variety. It bears white, pleasantly fragrant flowers about 5-6 cm across, with cream-coloured stamens and overlapping sepals; the young shoots and leaves show a purple-red tint.
The flowering period runs from April to May. Growing to around 400 cm tall, 'Elten' climbs vigorously over trellises, arbours, pergolas and fences, and is also well suited to covering trees or larger areas - ideal for gardens where a flowering screen is wanted quickly.
'Elten' is reliably hardy (zone 7, down to around -17.7 to -12.3 °C). As the flowers form on the previous year's wood, the plant needs no regular pruning; if required, cut it back to about 100 cm in June after flowering to control its size.
