Clematis 'Hakuokan' was bred around 1957 by the Japanese breeder Yoshio Kubota; its name means 'white royal crown' in Japanese. Jim Fisk introduced it to Britain in 1971. The 12 to 15 cm flowers glow deep violet to blue-purple inside, while a wide white bar runs down the outside of the seven to eight overlapping, pointed petals. White filaments and pale yellow to creamy white anthers add a bright accent, and the first flowers are occasionally semi-double.
The first flowering appears in May and June, with a second following from July to August. Reaching around 250 cm, the plant climbs up a support as a climber and thrives in sunny to semi-shady spots, ideally sheltered. After flowering, decorative seed heads remain on the plant for a long time.
'Hakuokan' is hardy (zone 6, -23.3 to -17.8 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June.
