Clematis 'Trikatrei' was bred in 1984 by Estonian breeder Uno Kivistik from 'Jubilejnyj-70' and open pollination, and belongs to a series named after an Estonian nursery rhyme. Its 8 cm dark violet flowers show 4 to 6 tepals with slightly wavy margins and pale stamens that stand out attractively against the deep colour.
From June to August the flowers appear abundantly on vigorous shoots reaching about 250 cm. This makes 'Trikatrei' an excellent choice for trellises, arbours and obelisks in medium to large gardens, as well as for container growing on a patio or balcony. A sunny to partly shaded spot with a cool root run suits it best.
'Trikatrei' is reliably hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and rewards an annual pruning in March, when the shoots are cut back to about 25 cm — this encourages strong new growth and dependable flowering on the current season's wood.
