The clematis 'Asagasumi' is a Japanese cultivar from breeder Yoshio Kubota. Its name means 'Morning Mist' - and indeed the large flowers in white with a violet tinge look as if veiled in a delicate haze. They measure 10 to 15 cm and have six to eight petals. The cultivar is also traded under the name 'Opaline'.
Growing about 300 cm tall, 'Asagasumi' suits trellises, obelisks and pergolas. The first flowering appears in June, with further blooms from July to September. Sun to semi-shade is the preferred position.
'Asagasumi' is hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June - this encourages strong growth and abundant flowering.
