Clematis 'montana var. rubens' is a natural variety of the Himalayan clematis from China, discovered by Augustine Henry in 1884 and introduced under this name by the Veitch & Son nursery; Ernest Henry Wilson brought it into commercial cultivation in 1901. The 6 cm flowers consist of four slightly twisted, mid to pale pink sepals around a greeny-yellow centre and carry a delicate vanilla scent. The young foliage emerges bronze and the new shoots are tinged reddish — clear differences from the white-flowered species.
Flowering runs from May to June. At around 500 cm, 'montana var. rubens' is a vigorous climber, excellently suited to fences, walls, pergolas and larger trees. It thrives best in a sunny to partly shaded, sheltered position — the sunnier the spot, the stronger the scent.
'montana var. rubens' is hardy to zone 7 (about -17.7 to -12.3 °C). After flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June; like all montana clematis, it tolerates this pruning well and reliably resprouts.

A "cheeky" clematis, it grabs hold everywhere, even reaching into the gutter etc. It needs space and can cover a large area, also in height, then the enormous abundance of pink flowers looks dreamy anyway. Anyone who doesn't have so much space should cut it back after flowering in height and width (be bold about it). It then shoots vigorously again during the summer and is already secretly reaching for the gutter again... I fertilise it in early spring, that's usually enough.Automatically translated · Show original
Very well packed, 2 clematis arrived undamaged, even each with a bud. Great :-)I'm thrilled at what strong plants were delivered. It remains to be seen how they will develop after planting, I'll gladly send photos later.Automatically translated · Show original
