Clematis alpina 'Foxy' was raised in Britain in 1996 by breeder Raymond Evison as a sport of the variety 'Frankie'. Its small, nodding, bell-shaped flowers show a delicate pale pink with pink staminodes at the centre; the flowers reach 5-6 cm across, with sepals about 4-5 cm long.
'Foxy' flowers from April to May and reaches a height of around 250 cm. This makes it well suited to trellises, fences, pergolas and small shrubs, and it also thrives in a large container. It copes well in any aspect, preferring full sun to partial shade – the roots and base of the plant should just stay cool and shaded.
'Foxy' is reliably hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. For vigorous growth, cut your Clematis Foxy back to about 100 cm in June. Moist, well-drained soil lets the plant sprout and flower reliably year after year.
