Clematis orientalis var. orientalis is a botanical variety of the oriental clematis, not a garden cultivar, and belongs to the Tangutica Group. It was introduced from China in 1924; the species itself ranges from the Aegean to Tibet. The flowers are small, nodding, 2.5 cm across and red with yellow. They have four petals that curve back. The green foliage is pinnately divided and often lobed.
The flowers open from July to August. At around 250 cm in height, the plant is a deciduous climber. It grows in sun or partial shade in moist but well-drained soil; chalky, clay and sandy soils are possible. Plant it so that the top of the root ball lies about 8 cm below the soil surface.
Clematis orientalis var. orientalis is hardy (zone 5, down to about -29 °C). Cut it back to about 25 cm in March. Wear gloves when cutting, as the plant can irritate the skin.
