Clematis 'Tibetan Gem' is a selection from Clematis tibetana subsp. vernayi var. laciniifolia, raised from the collection of Dutch collector Jan Fopma and named by Wim Snoeijer in 1998. It belongs to the Tangutica Group and bears yellow, nodding flowers, 5 cm across, set against finely feathered, blue-green bloomed foliage.
From September to October, 'Tibetan Gem' enriches the garden with its late flowering, when many other climbers have already finished. At around 400 cm, it suits trellises, fences and larger supports in sun to partial shade; attractive, silky silvery seedheads follow the flowers.
'Tibetan Gem' is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 to -23.4 °C). Cut it back hard to about 50 cm in March (pruning group 3) — this keeps the plant compact and ensures reliable flowering in late summer and autumn.
