Clematis 'Sunrise' belongs to the Clematis montana group and bears violet-pink flowers in a simple, classic form, 4 to 6 cm across. 'Sunrise' is regarded as one of the more manageable, less rampant montana varieties.
'Sunrise' flowers from May to June and grows vigorously to about 500 cm – typical for the Clematis montana group, among the most vigorous of all clematis. This makes it well suited to large trellises, pergolas, fences and covering walls, though less so for container growing.
'Sunrise' is winter-hardy to zone 7 (about -18 to -12 °C), hardy enough for most German locations; in very exposed sites, young plants still benefit from some winter protection. Cut the shoots back to about 200 cm in June, right after flowering, to keep the vigorous growth in check.
