Clematis 'Keith Richardson' was raised in 1961 by the British breeder Walter Pennell from a cross of 'Barbara Dibley' and 'Bracebridge Star' and introduced in 1975; it is named after Keith Richardson, the propagator at the Pennell nursery. Its large, star-shaped flowers open 15 to 20 cm wide in pink with darker stripes, carried on six to eight elongated, elliptical sepals that overlap slightly at the base, with wavy edges and dark violet stamens at the centre.
'Keith Richardson' flowers twice a year: first in June, then again from July to August. Reaching around 300 cm in height, the plant is well suited to trellises, lattices and obelisks and is undemanding about aspect, so it can be trained against almost any wall or fence; it also does well in containers. It prefers a sunny to partially shaded position.
Its hardiness extends to zone 6 (-23.3 to -17.8 °C), so 'Keith Richardson' reliably copes with colder Central European winters too. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June.
