The clematis 'Hanaguruma' is a Japanese cultivar that originated around 1985 and has been available internationally since 1996. Its name translates roughly as 'wheel of blossom' - and indeed the large flowers open wide and flat. They measure 10-12 cm and consist of seven to eight tepals, with yellow stamens in the centre setting a bright accent. The flowers are violet.
Growing about 300 cm tall, 'Hanaguruma' suits trellises, obelisks and pergolas. The flowers appear from July to September, adding colour to the garden for many weeks. The cultivar does best in a sunny to partly shaded spot with evenly moist, well-drained soil.
'Hanaguruma' is hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C). Cut the plant back to 50 cm in March.
