The variegated Japanese honeysuckle Lonicera japonica 'Halliana' is a robust, strongly fragrant twining and climbing plant that is ideal for greening fences, walls, pergolas, terraces or trellises. With its upright, widely twining habit it reaches heights of 3 to 6 metres, under optimal conditions even up to 10 metres. It grows 50 to 150 cm per year and forms a dense, decorative canopy of leaves.

From May to July and a second time from August to September, the honeysuckle adorns itself with numerous white to pale yellow, simply shaped flowers. These are not only a visual highlight but also release an intense, sweetish-aromatic fragrance reminiscent of tea and jasmine. The flowering often even continues into October or November.

The leafy, mid-green leaves are egg-shaped and partly evergreen in winter, so that a certain amount of privacy is retained even in the cold season. The variety originally comes from China and Japan and thus brings a Far Eastern flair to local gardens.

Location & care:

The honeysuckle prefers sunny to partially shaded spots and grows best in fresh to moist, sandy-loamy to loamy soils. It is adaptable, tolerates both slightly acidic and alkaline soils and copes with our winters without problems, as it is well frost-hardy. As a shallow-rooted plant it needs sufficient space at its location, but also thrives in containers if these are deep enough and filled with nutrient-rich soil.

Special features:

  • two flowering periods a year
  • strongly fragrant flowers
  • semi-evergreen and well frost-hardy
  • versatile use in the garden

With its long flowering period, its enchanting fragrance and its robustness, the honeysuckle 'Halliana' is one of the most popular varieties of its kind and a reliable eye-catcher in any garden.
