Clematis 'Burma Star' was bred around 1990 by British breeder Barry Fretwell. Its name honours a relative of the breeder who endured the hardships of the Burma campaign in the Second World War. The roughly 10 cm flowers appear in rich violet with a reddish central bar on the pointed, slightly wavy tepals, along with deep red stamens.
'Burma Star' flowers first in June and again from July to August. With a height of around 200 cm and its unusually upright, compact habit, it is particularly well suited to container growing, but also cuts a fine figure on trellises and obelisks. The variety thrives in sun to partial shade in any aspect.
'Burma Star' is hardy to zone 6 (-23.3 to -17.8 °C). After the first flush in June, cut the plant back to around 100 cm; the second flush follows in late summer. Compared with other clematis varieties, 'Burma Star' needs very little care.
