Clematis 'Darius' was bred in 1988 by the Lithuanian breeder L. Bakevicius and is named in honour of an aviation pioneer. Its flowers measure around 15 cm and appear in pink with darker stripes. They consist of six elliptic, pointed tepals with crimped margins; in the centre sit red-purple anthers on white filaments.
Growing to about 300 cm, 'Darius' climbs vigorously up trellises, obelisks and climbing frames. It flowers in May and June. Choose a sunny to partially shaded spot with moist but well-drained soil; the root zone should stay cool and shaded.
'Darius' is hardy to zone 6 (-23.3 to -17.8 °C). As an early large-flowered hybrid of pruning group 2 it flowers on last year's wood, so do not prune hard in spring. Instead, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June after flowering.
