Clematis 'Retroussee' was bred in 2007 by the British breeder Barry Fretwell from a cross of (Clematis texensis x Clematis pitcheri) x Clematis crispa and belongs to the Viorna Group. Its nodding, urn-shaped flowers, 3-4 cm across, appear in a strong red with yellow, with a cream band down the centre of each of the four sepals; their margins are distinctly wavy and the tips curl far outward in a turban-like fashion.
From July to September, the flowers open on the current year's growth. At 250 to 300 cm in height, 'Retroussee' climbs vigorously up a trellis, lattice or obelisk, making it well suited for screening and larger climbing supports in the garden.
'Retroussee' is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 °C) and copes well with harsh winters. Cut the plant back to about 25 cm in March so it produces vigorous new growth and abundant flowers in spring.
