Clematis 'Westerplatte' comes from the Polish breeder Brother Stefan Franczak and is named after the peninsula in Gdansk Bay whose defenders held out for seven days against the German attack in September 1939. Its flowers are among the few truly red ones in the genus: 12–15 cm across, single and perfectly shaped, in velvety deep red with a brighter red bar on the overlapping sepals and deep red stamens in the centre. It was awarded a gold medal at Plantarium in Holland.
At around 200 cm, 'Westerplatte' grows compact and bushy, suiting trellises, obelisks and supports as well as a container on the patio or balcony. The flowers appear from July to September. It makes a fine companion for moderately vigorous shrubs – peach, yellow or cream roses also provide a lovely contrast. Choose a sunny to semi-shaded spot with moist, well-drained soil and keep the roots shaded.
'Westerplatte' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and is considered very easy to care for. Cut the plant back to about 50 cm in March.
