Clematis 'Hendersonii' has a history of almost 200 years: it was raised in Great Britain in 1835 by J.A. Henderson from a cross between *Clematis integrifolia* and *Clematis viticella*, making it one of the oldest clematis still in cultivation. Its flowers are truly eye-catching: bell-shaped, slightly nodding, 5–7 cm across, and a rich bluish-purple colour, beautifully complemented by greenish-yellow stamens. A gentle fragrance and the decorative, fluffy seedheads that adorn the garden well into autumn complete the charm of this exceptional variety.
From June to August, 'Hendersonii' puts on a magnificent display. With a height of around 300 cm and its characteristic non-climbing habit, this clematis is not a conventional climber but a scrambler: it leans against supports or threads loosely through shrubs, roses and perennials, creating its own distinctive garden style. It is particularly beautiful in naturalistic borders, on obelisks or among sturdy shrubs – and thrives in virtually any aspect, from south to north-facing positions.
'Hendersonii' is an exceptionally robust and easy-care clematis, reliably hardy to Zone 5, withstanding temperatures of -28.8 to -23.4 °C. In March, simply cut the plant back to around 25 cm so that it can shoot up vigorously in spring. Thanks to this straightforward care routine, it is an ideal choice for beginners and experienced gardeners alike.
