Clematis 'Alba Luxurians' is a well-established British variety raised around 1900 by the renowned nursery Veitch & Son. A classic viticella type, it is among the very few clematis that genuinely appear bicoloured: the 5 to 8 cm nodding flowers display a luminous white ground suffused with an unmistakable greenish shimmer, most pronounced on the first summer blooms. The typically four — occasionally up to six — blunt, slightly recurved tepals reveal a pale green midrib with delicate bluish tones on the reverse. At the centre, a striking tuft of dark reddish-purple, almost black stamens creates a vivid contrast. What makes this cultivar special is how the balance between white and green shifts with light and season: shade encourages the green tones, while sunnier positions tend to suppress them. Late autumn flowers may take on a faint lavender undertone.

From July to September, 'Alba Luxurians' flowers abundantly and continuously — a hallmark of the viticella group. It climbs to around 300 cm and suits obelisks, fences, pergolas and arbours equally well, as well as scrambling through roses or shrubs. Its tolerance of any aspect, including partially shaded positions, makes it one of the most versatile clematis for virtually any garden. The extraordinary flowers also make it a favourite with flower arrangers.

'Alba Luxurians' is an exceptionally hardy plant, rated to USDA Zone 5 (−28.8 to −23.4 °C), making it a reliable choice for Central European gardens. As a pruning Group 3 variety, simply cut it back hard to around 25 cm in March. Cultivation is straightforward: it produces fresh growth each year from the base, flowers on new wood, and proves consistently robust and resistant to disease.

Very pretty, delicate flowers that weave their way through a yew in the shade in our garden, flowering abundantly and glowing brightly there. The white flowers often have small, charming green markings. It grows lushly, I can only recommend it!
