Clematis 'General Sikorski' was introduced to the trade in 1980 by Polish breeder Władysław Noll and is named in honour of General Władysław Eugeniusz Sikorski (1881–1943), Poland's wartime prime minister in exile. Its 12–15 cm flowers glow in rich blue-violet with a fine reddish bar running from the base of each of the six to eight tepals, framed by creamy filaments and yellow anthers.

From June to September, 'General Sikorski' flowers in two flushes – abundant in early summer, followed by a second, slightly lighter flush in late summer. At around 300 cm, it climbs vigorously up trellises, pergolas and other supports, and also does well in containers on balconies and terraces. It prefers a sunny to semi-shaded spot – in semi-shade the blue-violet colour stays richest for longest.

'General Sikorski' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and ranks among the robust, time-tested varieties – not least thanks to the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. After the first flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June; in early spring it is enough to remove dead and weak shoots.
