Clematis: origin and use
Clematis, also called virgin's bower, are native all over the world. This perennial climbing plant belongs to the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). Most species are fully hardy in Central Europe with its temperate climate zones and quite low-maintenance - which makes them very rewarding, grateful garden plants.

Most clematis have a climbing habit and bear large, richly coloured blooms throughout the summer months. However, there are also herbaceous and bushy clematis varieties and numerous wild species among them. To climb, twining clematis absolutely need a climbing support. Depending on vigour, trellises and climbing grids, fences, walls or even other shrubs and large trees are suitable. A clematis looks especially beautiful when it climbs up a rose obelisk - even planted on its own, without a rose.
Many clematis are also very popular rose companions. Large-flowered clematis hybrids make good planting partners for medium to large shrub roses or smaller climbing roses. But herbaceous clematis also show their strengths, above all in combination with a shrub rose or bedding rose. The vigorous wild species, which usually have four or five sepals, are even equal companions for a rambler. Cleverly chosen, a combination of rose and clematis extends the flowering period of the plant it climbs considerably. For the combination with a climbing rose we increasingly recommend varieties from the group of Italian clematis / Cl. viticella and other long-flowering clematis varieties.
Because clematis differ greatly in their growth habits depending on the species, they have been divided into three pruning groups. What they all have in common is that there should be no waterlogging in the root zone. However, so that they do not dry out, they must be watered carefully and regularly. Organic fertiliser is best. Apart from most evergreen clematis, all clematis are fully hardy.

Clematis: special variety lists
These variety lists and the clematis search by criteria help you find clematis across the different botanical groups:

Clematis: all varieties by botanical species
The clematis family is extremely diverse, and the different botanical species sometimes differ considerably in their characteristics, care and the possibilities they offer in the garden.
We have not grouped our clematis varieties by the simpler 'gardeners' classification' but by their botanical species. A simpler classification with fewer groups would lead to more varieties per category, which we want to avoid.
For a quick overview, the main characteristics of each clematis are shown beneath a representative picture. Further information on origin, care and special features, as well as the plants belonging to each group, can be found on the following pages for the respective lower classifications:
Planting and caring for clematis
For your clematis to grow healthily for years and bloom reliably, it needs the right location, regular pruning and a little care. You will find everything about it in detail in our guide:

Buying clematis online: what to look out for
All year round we have more than 100 clematis varieties available for immediate sale. You can get them from us at the nursery or have them delivered to your home after an online order.
Our clematis are at least 2 years old with strong shoots, well rooted in a 2 L container, in the 40 - 100 cm quality.
Plants that are not ready to ship right now can be pre-ordered and will be sent to you at the earliest possible date. Payment is made by invoice enclosed with the parcel.
When shipping clematis, up to four plants fit securely into one box. For each parcel started, shipping costs for Germany are €6.90. Of course we also send clematis to Austria, Switzerland and many other European countries; you will find the prices for international shipping here.
Caution when buying clematis
A large picture label does not necessarily mean that a strong clematis plant is hiding behind it.
Picture labels attached or stuck directly to the pot block the view of the base of the clematis in the pot. Often a very young plant with a few weak shoots and barely developed roots is hidden behind it. The disappointment is great when it is then to be planted, because it no longer looks anything like the picture.
To judge the quality of the plant in relation to the price, you should take a look at the base before you take the clematis with you - even if it is hidden by a pretty picture.
Very cheap clematis offered for sale online are often the 40 - 60 cm quality. These are usually one-year-old, relatively weak plants. The small extra charge for the 60 - 100 cm quality is usually more than worthwhile.
Clematis: frequently asked questions and answers
What are clematis?
Clematis, in German called Waldrebe, are perennial, hardy climbing plants from the buttercup family with about 300 wild species and over 6,000 varieties.
How many clematis varieties do you carry?

How big do clematis grow?
How quickly will my clematis be delivered?
All clematis in stock can be ordered directly and are shipped as soon as possible after your order is received.
Please note, however: if your order also contains plants that are not yet available due to the season – for example bare-root roses, whose shipping only begins at planting season – the order is by default only shipped once all items are available.
If you would like to receive your clematis that are in stock in advance, please note this with your order (e.g. in the comments field), stating that you would like two separate deliveries. We will then ship the immediately available clematis in advance and the seasonally available plants in a second delivery at the appropriate time.
