Clematis flammula is a wild species of virgin's bower native to the Mediterranean region and North Africa, cultivated in European gardens since the 16th century – one of the longest-known clematis species of all. Its pure white, star-shaped flowers grow up to 5 cm across, carry pale yellow stamens and give off an intense scent reminiscent of hawthorn and almonds, which unfolds especially after rain and in the evening.
Clematis flammula flowers from June to July and reaches a height of around 100 cm. This makes the species well suited to smaller trellises, obelisks and espaliers as well as container growing on balconies and terraces. It thrives best in a sunny, warm, sheltered spot with free-draining soil – its fine root system dislikes waterlogging and prefers rather lean over heavy, compacted ground.
Clematis flammula belongs to pruning group 3 and is cut back hard to about 10 cm in March – this encourages compact growth and abundant summer flowering. It is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to about -28 °C) and rewards a sheltered, sunny position with an especially intense fragrance. Note: the sap can irritate the skin – wear gloves when pruning or handling the plant.
