Clematis 'Annabella' was bred in 2016 by the Dutch nursery J. van Zoest and first presented at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show in 2017. It belongs to the Viorna Group and produces small, nodding, urn-shaped flowers about 3 cm across in a delicate pale pink, with tips that curl elegantly outward.
From June to September, 'Annabella' produces a continuous succession of flowers, giving it an especially long flowering season. Reaching a height of around 200 cm, it stays pleasantly compact and is ideal for trellises, obelisks and container growing on a balcony or patio. It prefers a sunny to semi-shaded spot, with the roots and base of the plant kept cool and shaded – for example by low companion plants or a layer of mulch.
'Annabella' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23.3 °C) and copes well with harsh winters. Prune it back hard to about 25 cm above the ground in March so it produces vigorous new growth and abundant flowers in spring. Thanks to its compact, low-maintenance habit, it is also well suited to beginners and smaller gardens.
