Clematis 'Hybrida Sieboldii' is a historic cultivar raised by the Dutch breeder B. Droog before 1874 from a cross of Clematis lanuginosa and Clematis patens. Its 10–15 cm flowers are blue, more precisely lavender-blue, with a darker central bar on the overlapping tepals and striking red to brown anthers. It is also known as 'Sieboldii' and is often confused with 'Ramona' in the literature.
The main flowering is in June and July, with occasional flowers into August. At around 300 cm, 'Hybrida Sieboldii' climbs vigorously on trellises, supports and obelisks and can also be grown in a container. It thrives in sunny to semi-shaded positions in moist, well-drained soil.
'Hybrida Sieboldii' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For bushy, freely flowering growth, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. Give it a few years to establish — then it shows its full abundance of flowers.
