Clematis 'Rahvarinne' was raised in Estonia in 1985 by Uno and Aili Kivistik and first flowered in 1988. Its parents are given as 'Ernest Markham' and 'Bal Tzvetov'. Its 12–15 cm flowers are violet; six broad, overlapping tepals with recurved tips and wavy margins surround brown anthers on pale, almost white filaments.
From July to August 'Rahvarinne' carries its flowers on new wood. At around 150 cm it suits trellises, obelisks and other supports, and can also be grown in a container. It likes a position in sun or partial shade, for example a south-, east- or west-facing aspect, in moist but well-drained soil.
'Rahvarinne' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 25 cm in March. Wear gloves when pruning and planting, as the sap can irritate the skin.
