The Clematis 'Queen Alexandra' comes from the English breeding house G. Jackman & Son and was already in commerce before 1912 – a variety from the early days of large-flowered English clematis breeding. Its 12 cm blooms appear in pale purple-violet with a silvery-white central bar on each of the eight pointed, slightly wavy sepals, along with white filaments and yellow anthers.
'Queen Alexandra' flowers from May to June and reaches a height of around 150 cm – a compact habit well suited to containers, smaller trellises and obelisks, and more confined gardens. The variety tolerates almost any aspect and can therefore also be planted against north- or east-facing walls.
With zone 6, 'Queen Alexandra' is reliably hardy and tolerates temperatures down to around -23.3 °C. To encourage strong growth and abundant flowering, it is recommended to cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June; as a light-pruning group variety, it otherwise needs no drastic pruning.
