Clematis 'Pohjanael', raised in 1981 by Estonian breeder Uno Kivistik as a seedling of the well-known cultivar 'Ernest Markham', takes its name from the Estonian word for the North Star. Its large, 10–15 cm flowers appear in bold violet with purple bars, set off by white filaments and dark violet anthers.
At around 200 cm, 'Pohjanael' flowers in June and again from July to August. It suits trellises, obelisks and other supports in smaller to medium-sized gardens and also thrives in containers; it tolerates almost any aspect.
'Pohjanael' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23.3 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the shoots back to about 100 cm in June.
