Clematis 'Lord Herschell' was raised by English breeder Barry Fretwell (Peveril Clematis Nursery in Devon). The 5 cm flowers are purple-violet, deep velvety reddish-purple and lustrous, shaped between a trumpet and a tulip, with pale green stamens. Ornamental seedheads follow the flowers.
At around 125 cm, 'Lord Herschell' stays compact as a herbaceous perennial and suits borders, perennial plantings and above all containers. It flowers from June to August; regular dead-heading noticeably extends the display. It looks best in full sun but tolerates any aspect. Silver- or grey-leaved plants make good companions.
'Lord Herschell' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -28 °C). Cut the plant back to about 10 cm in March – it will then shoot vigorously and flower richly.
