Clematis 'Heather Herschell' was raised by Barry Fretwell at the Peveril Clematis Nursery in Christow near Exeter in Devon and is named after Lady Herschell, the wife of Lord Herschell. It is a charming, bushy herbaceous clematis with delicate pink, bell-shaped flowers measuring 4–5 cm.
From July to September, 'Heather Herschell' flowers reliably on the current year's growth. At 100–120 cm tall, it stays manageable. It has no clinging organs: the stems lean against a support as in shrub roses or sprawl over the ground. This makes it suitable for growing through perennials and small shrubs, for small supports and for containers on the patio. It is easy-going about aspect.
'Heather Herschell' is very winter-hardy (zone 4, down to about -34 °C) and dies back to the rootstock in winter. Cut the plant back to about 25 cm in March (pruning group 3) – this encourages strong new growth and abundant flowering.
