Clematis 'Ice Maiden', raised by English breeder Ken Pyne from 'Lasurstern' crossed with an unknown parent, was selected in 1987 and introduced in 1998. Its roughly 13 cm flowers appear in a delicate pale blue that deepens slightly towards the edge of the sepals, with a greenish central bar and cream-yellow anthers; the gently wavy sepal margins give the flowers a lively, almost crystalline structure.
At around 200 cm, 'Ice Maiden' flowers twice a year — from May to June and again from July to August — making it well suited to trellises, obelisks and other supports on walls, fences or in larger containers; it thrives in sunny to semi-shaded spots.
'Ice Maiden' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm after the first flowering in June so it flowers vigorously again in summer.
