Clematis 'Fireworks' was raised in 1980 by the English breeder John Treasure from a cross of 'Maureen' and 'Nelly Moser' and introduced in 1984. Its 12–15 cm flowers glow in violet with purple stripes: on the slightly wavy, slightly twisted sepals runs a strong reddish-purple central bar. White filaments with coloured anthers add a light accent at the centre of the flower.
At around 300 cm, 'Fireworks' climbs trellises, supports, arbours and poles, and can also be trained over shrubs. The first flush appears in May and June, followed by a second flush from July to August with somewhat smaller flowers. It thrives in sunny to partly shaded spots and copes with any aspect.
'Fireworks' is hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and belongs to pruning group 2 (light pruning). Plant it with the crown set deep in the soil. Cut it back to about 100 cm in June, after the first flowering.
