Clematis 'Blue Explosion' is a Polish variety bred by Szczepan Marczyński, available since 2011. Its large flowers reach 12–14 cm across, coloured a vivid blue with pink pigmentation at the sepal tips, set off by white filaments and yellow anthers. Flowers on the previous year's shoots often appear semi-double, while those on new growth are single.
'Blue Explosion' flowers abundantly: from May to June on last year's shoots, then again from July to mid-September on new growth. At 200–300 cm, it is well suited to freestanding or wall-mounted supports and looks especially striking in a sunny spot against a light, contrasting background.
The variety is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and belongs to pruning group 2, requiring only light pruning: cut the plant back to about 75 cm in March to encourage vigorous, floriferous new growth.
