Clematis 'Birthday Girl' was bred by Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński from a cross of 'Westerplatte' and 'MAR-12-113-04' (crossed in 2013, introduced in 2023) and belongs to the patens group of clematis hybrids. Its 11–13 cm flowers open violet-red with a darker central bar and fade to violet as they age; in spring they often appear semi-double, with six outer and up to twenty smaller inner tepals, while the summer flowers are usually single.
At around 100 cm, 'Birthday Girl' is one of the more compact members of its group and was specifically bred for container growing: it is ideal for balconies and patios, for small trellises and obelisks, and for gardens with limited space. From May to July it produces its main flush with often more than a hundred flowers per season, and it is self-cleaning – spent flowers drop on their own.
'Birthday Girl' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 4, down to about -34 °C) and copes well even in colder locations. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June – as a pruning group 2 variety, it takes well to light pruning.
