Single, non-double blooms
Insect- and bee-friendly roses with accessible stamens
With their double blooms and therefore hard-to-reach stamens, roses are not a particularly good bee-forage shrub. The situation is somewhat better with single, non-double rose varieties with clearly visible, often decorative stamens. These are good pollen donors during the flowering period.
Far more important than "bee-friendliness", however, should be the intended use of these often large shrubs. During the rose flowering season bees find food on many other plants, which they then prefer. First and foremost, a rose should still please you and fit into your design concept.
Besides pollen for bees, the larger-growing shrubs with single flowers in particular create living and refuge space for birds in a natural garden. In autumn and winter they feed them with their rose hips.
