Clematis tangutica

Golden Clematis

To keep things a little clearer, we have also grouped other yellow-flowering clematis species such as Clematis orientalis and Clematis tibetana under Clematis tangutica.

All these wild species and the cultivars derived from them bloom in golden yellow to reddish-brown yellow, which is why they are commonly called golden clematis.

Clematis tangutica are quite undemanding as regards location, light conditions and soil, are not prone to wilt, and either bloom continuously from early summer to autumn or flower once, very abundantly, in late summer. Practically all Clematis tangutica and other yellow clematis are also very hardy in our climate, even in exposed locations.

The flowers are mostly smaller, lantern-shaped and waxy yellow. Many form attractive silvery, shiny seed heads, which are also popular with florists.

They are usually extremely vigorous, but some newer varieties such as Clematis 'Helios' or Golden Tiara are also perfectly suited to smaller gardens or containers. All of them belong to pruning group III, so they can be cut back hard in late winter or early spring.

The choice of yellow clematis is very large, so they cover many uses in the garden. Clematis tangutica feel at home as single specimens on sturdy climbing supports and against walls, grow into larger shrubs or trees, and also creep along the ground without support. The less vigorous yellow-flowering clematis also thrive in tubs and pots.
