The Clematis 'Monte Cassino' was bred by the Polish Brother Stefan Franczak and introduced in 1986. Its name commemorates the Battle of Monte Cassino in May 1944, in which the Polish 2nd Corps captured the strategically important hill south of Rome. The large, vivid red flowers show six slightly overlapping, wavy-edged petals with strikingly pale, creamy-yellow stamens on creamy filaments.
Growing to about 300 cm, 'Monte Cassino' flowers from July to September and works well on trellises, arches and obelisks, as well as growing through roses, shrubs or conifers. A sunny to semi-shaded position against a light background lets its bold red flower colour stand out particularly well.
'Monte Cassino' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut it back to around 50 cm in March.
