Clematis 'Etoile de Malicorne' comes from France and was raised by A. Girault around 1968. Its 10–15 cm flowers are violet with purple bars: each pointed, slightly wavy-edged tepal carries a dark purple-red central bar. In the centre sit red-brown anthers on white filaments.

The main flowering runs from May to June, followed by a second, somewhat lighter flush in August. At around 300 cm, 'Etoile de Malicorne' suits trellises, fences, pergolas and obelisks. It grows vigorously and is resistant to clematis wilt. A sheltered position in sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil suits it; it is best to keep the roots cool and shaded.

'Etoile de Malicorne' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 100 cm after the first flowering in June. Give it a few years to establish – then it shows its full vigour and abundance of flowers.

My two Etoile de Malicorne grow on either side of the garden shed and have stood there since 1997. The flowers are large and appear in masses. Then there is a long pause, and the next flush of flowers in late summer is no longer quite as lush, but is impossible to overlook because of the size of the flowers and the striking colour. The growth and foliage are quite vigorous. Clematis wilt has never occurred. At first I neglected pruning and several shoots lay on the ground. When I wanted to tidy up the plants one day, I saw that they had formed several offshoots with already strong roots. I then gave these to friends as small gifts. They were my first clematis from an ordinary garden centre. Apparently Etoile de Malicorne is no longer so widespread today. In my view, wrongly so.
