Clematis 'armandii' is a wild species native to central and western China, introduced in 1900 by the British plant collector Ernest Henry Wilson; its species name honours the French missionary and plant collector Père Armand David. As early as March and April it opens its 4-5 cm white to creamy-white flowers in dense clusters along the previous year's growth – delicately scented and among the earliest bloomers in the clematis range.

Growing up to 400 cm, 'armandii' makes an excellent evergreen screen for trellises, pergolas or sunny house walls. Its leathery, dark green leaves stay year-round, giving the garden structure even in winter. The plant thrives in a sheltered, warm spot in full sun to sun, ideally protected from cold winds.

'armandii' is rated for zone 9 (down to about -6 to -1 °C) and therefore needs a mild, sheltered position; in harsher locations, winter protection or container cultivation with cold-house overwintering is recommended. Since it flowers only on the previous year's wood, skip regular pruning – simply cut it back to about 200 cm after flowering in May to keep it compact.

Hallo liebe Gartenfreunde,

Magnificent !!!
Dear clematis enthusiasts,
my armandii grows and grows and grows .... for 10 years now. The trunk has meanwhile become as thick as an upper arm, two strong "arms" rest, supported with crossbars, on a 4 m long pergola each. Our climate zone is quite mild, but in some years we have briefly had - 15 degrees; the Armandii, however, gave Frosty only the cold shoulder. Even the planted-out oleander, fig, bay and olive trees/little trees survive with me. For some years now, because of the mild temperatures, our blooming splendour has begun as early as mid-February and reaches its peak in April/May. The very abundant flowering (flower clusters up to 30 cm long, the leaves are hardly visible during flowering :-) and the indescribably delicious almond-like fragrance magically attract both insects and the eyes of neighbours/visitors. This clematis is absolutely disease-resistant. During the growing season I feed it monthly with my homemade nettle, horsetail and comfrey fresh-plant liquid manure (1 l to 10 l of water). After flowering I merely trim the plant into shape. For some years now my darling has surprised/delighted me in July with a reduced flower spectacle for a second time. The second flower clusters grow out of the middle of the April flower clusters, so please do not cut them off.
Much joy with this magnificent and uncomplicated plant. With NATUREly passionate greetings MarieJo
