Clematis 'Andromeda', raised by English breeder Ken Pyne, is one of the most striking bicoloured hybrids: its 10–15 cm flowers are creamy white with a vivid raspberry-pink central bar on each sepal, set off by yellow stamens. Its special trait — the early flowers in May and June are often semi-double, while the later summer flush comes single.
At around 200 cm, 'Andromeda' is well suited to trellises, obelisks and other supports, happily clambers into small trees or larger shrubs, and thrives in containers. It dislikes hot, full-sun positions: in semi-shade — including north-, east- or west-facing aspects — the pink bar keeps its colour longest.
'Andromeda' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 100 cm after the first flowering in June. Give it two to three years to establish — then it shows its full splendour.
