Clematis 'Dancing Dorien' was selected in 2000 by Dutch breeder Wim Snoeijer and introduced in 2009 by the van Zoest nursery, named after Dorien van Zoest, daughter of Lina and Jan van Zoest. The ball-shaped, upright flowers appear fully double in the first flowering period, in delicate white with pink shadings, then open semi-double and wide in pure white during the second flowering period, with six petals measuring 6 to 8 cm across surrounding a crown of white stamens with cream-coloured anthers. The foliage, bronze when young, matures to a rich dark green.
'Dancing Dorien' flowers first from May to June and, after a short pause, blooms again from July to August. Reaching around 200 cm in height, it is ideally suited to trellises, obelisks or a large container on patio or balcony, bringing colour all summer long with its double flowering period.
The variety is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and rewards pruning back to around 75 cm in June with fresh growth; otherwise, pruning only when needed and mainly removing spent blooms is enough.
