Clematis 'GLORIOUS® Surprise' (breeding code 'Zo24010') comes from the Dutch nursery J. van Zoest Beheer BV in Boskoop, whose plant breeders' rights application for this novelty is still pending. It belongs to the GLORIOUS series, which also includes the fiery red 'GLORIOUS® Red'. Its 8 to 10 cm flowers show a vivid colour gradient: strong pink at the tepal edges fading to delicate white towards the centre.
'GLORIOUS® Surprise' flowers abundantly from June to September and reaches an impressive height of 300 cm. As a member of the Viticella group, it is considered particularly robust and largely resistant to the feared clematis wilt — a good choice for trellises, obelisks, pergolas or for climbing through sturdy shrubs. As with most viticella clematis, the roots should stay shaded while the shoots grow in sun to part shade.
The variety is reliably winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 °C) and is cut back to about 25 cm in March to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant flowering. Being a viticella, it tolerates a thorough cutback well and develops a bushy, free-flowering habit already in its first year.
