Clematis 'Western Virgin' is a hybrid of Clematis virginiana and Clematis ligusticifolia and belongs to the Vitalba group. It was raised in Canada in 1962 by the breeder F. L. Skinner and is also known as 'Prairie Traveller's Joy'. Its flowers are small at around 1 cm, but appear in great numbers: pure white, with yellow anthers and a lovely fragrance.
From August to September the flowers open on the current year's growth. Reaching around 350 cm in height, 'Western Virgin' grows vigorously and suits trellises and other structures it can climb. Allow plenty of room, as this variety is very vigorous.
'Western Virgin' is very hardy (zone 4, down to approx. -34 °C). Cut it back to about 25 cm in March: because the flowers form on new wood, it then shoots away strongly and flowers abundantly.
