The Clematis 'LIBERTY' was bred by the Dutch nursery J. van Zoest and raised in 2004; in Britain it was introduced by Thorncroft Clematis at the Chelsea Flower Show. Its 10–12 cm, star-shaped flowers are white with a bold red margin and red-veined sepals, set off by contrasting red-violet stamens. The first spring flowers carry eight sepals, the later ones only six.
'LIBERTY' flowers from early May into June, with an occasional second flush in late summer. Reaching around 200 cm, it suits trellises, obelisks and climbing frames on walls, fences or pergolas, and grows equally well in a large container. It likes a sunny to semi-shaded, sheltered spot — keep the root area cool and shaded, for example with ground cover plants or a layer of gravel.
'LIBERTY' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and belongs to pruning group 2, which needs only light pruning: cut the stems back to around 75 cm in June to encourage strong growth and a good second flush. Like many patens hybrids, it rewards a sheltered spot with ever more generous flowering in following years.
