The clematis 'Pointy' was raised in 1990 by the Swedish breeder Magnus Johnson from a cross between Clematis chiisanensis and Clematis turkestanica, and belongs to the Atragene group of alpine clematis. Its nodding, bell-shaped flowers reach 5 cm across and appear in a striking yellow speckled with purple; the narrow, pointed tepals are first incurved at the tip before curling back slightly.
Growing to around 250 cm, 'Pointy' climbs well on trellises, obelisks or a wall-mounted trellis, where its nodding flowers are shown off to best effect from below; it is also suitable for container growing. It flowers from April to May, set off by its ternate foliage.
'Pointy' is reliably hardy (zone 5, down to around -28.8 °C) and copes with harsh winters without special protection. For vigorous growth and abundant flowering the following year, cut the shoots back to about 100 cm in June.
