Clematis 'Ragamuffin' was bred in 1987 by the English breeder Ken Pyne from the variety 'Sealand Gem' and introduced in 1999. The large, 10-14 cm flowers appear in pink with darker stripes and yellow stamens, with the season's first flowers often semi-double while the later flush is single.
'Ragamuffin' flowers first in June and puts on a further flush from July to August. With a vigorous height of around 300 cm, the variety is well suited to tall trellises, lattice frames and pergolas, where it can unfold generously.
'Ragamuffin' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and belongs to pruning group 2, the early large-flowered hybrids. For strong growth and abundant repeat flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June.
