Clematis 'Negritjanka' was bred in 1964 by M. I. Orlov in the former Soviet Union, in Kyiv (present-day Ukraine), from a cross of 'Gipsy Queen' and Clematis viticella. Its 8-12 cm flowers glow in a very dark, almost black-looking, velvety purple-violet and carry striking reddish-purple anthers on creamy filaments – an appealing contrast to the dark flower colour.
From July to September, 'Negritjanka' produces an abundance of new flowers, growing vigorously to 300 cm. This vigour makes it an ideal climber for trellises, trelliswork, pergolas or obelisks, where it unfolds its full floral display in a sunny to partly shaded spot. A light-coloured background sets off the deep, dark flower colour especially well.
'Negritjanka' is well winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -28.8 °C) and belongs to pruning group 3: cut the stems back hard to about 25 cm in March so the plant stays bushy and flowers abundantly in summer. It is considered vigorous, easy-care and undemanding about its position.
