Clematis alpina 'Tage Lundell' comes from the Swedish breeder Tage Lundell, who raised it in 1970 from a cross of Clematis ochotensis and Clematis alpina; it was named in 1982. Its nodding, bell-shaped flowers are violet and measure 5–6 cm. The four tepals surround violet-purple stamens at the centre – a dark, elegant eye-catcher of the Atragene group.
Flowering begins in April, making 'Tage Lundell' one of the earliest climbers of the gardening year. At around 200 cm tall, it suits trellises, lattices and obelisks and can be planted in any aspect. Since it flowers on the previous year's wood, it usually shows its full flowering glory only after one to two years of establishment.
'Tage Lundell' is very hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C) and grows without fuss. For abundant flowering the following year, cut the plant back to 100 cm in June.
